‘Frogs’ can one day be saviours, says PN man

LARUT: The Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate for the Batu Kurau state seat, Najmuddin Elias has no qualms about being labelled a “frog”.
In fact, the former Umno man believes party hoppers can actually become “saviours” when the occasion demands it.
In dismissing the taunts of Barisan Nasional (BN) supporters, Najmuddin said party hoppers like him could still help those in need of aid, even though they had mocked him for being a “frog”.
“We must not let our anger get the better of us to the point that we become condescending towards others.
“We might hate someone today, but that person might be the one from whom we may seek help another day,” he told FMT.
BN supporters had hurled abuse at Najmuddin, a two-term Batu Kurau assemblyman, and PN secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin on nomination day, deriding them for defecting from Umno after BN lost the 2018 general election (GE14).
Najmuddin had followed Hamzah, who won the Larut parliamentary seat on a BN ticket in GE14 and joined Bersatu.
Having represented the people of Batu Kurau from 2004 to 2013, he is in a four-way fight with Saliza Ahmad (BN), Aiman Azizuddi Husin (Pakatan Harapan) and Zulkifli Yahya (Pejuang).
Najmuddin described the partnership between PAS and Bersatu as a “perfect” combination that could establish a solid government.
He said PAS’ religious leaders would serve as guides for good governance, while Bersatu had an edge when it came to management.
However, he admitted that the Muafakat Nasional (MN) alliance, formalised by PAS and Umno in 2019, was still the best platform to unite the ummah in Malaysia.
“I actually cried because PAS and Umno have been divided all these years.”
He questioned why the MN pact had been “destroyed”, but said: “At this early stage, let Bersatu partner with PAS first (under PN). This might be the starting point for uniting the ummah.”
