PETALING JAYA: An Umno Supreme Council member is questioning whether the Registrar of Societies’ (RoS) is being used as a political tool by delaying the approval of an amendment to its constitution.

Puad Zarkashi asked how Umno’s application to delay its party elections to after the next general election would be considered unconstitutional, pointing out that applications by MCA and Gerakan to do the same had been approved previously.

“Is the RoS only targeting Umno because its minister is from Bersatu? It previously issued a letter claiming that the Umno Supreme Council is merely a ‘caretaker’,” he said on Facebook.

The RoS falls under the purview of the home affairs ministry helmed by Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin.

On Saturday, Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob said July 16 marks the end of the 60-day period for a decision by the RoS on Umno’s application to amend its constitution to delay party elections.

The proposed amendment was unanimously adopted at an Umno general meeting on May 15. It allows party elections to be postponed for up to six months after a general election or up to 18 months from the end of its leadership’s term.

Umno’s elections for the 2021-2023 term were due on June 30 last year, but were postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and must be held before Dec 30 this year.

However, party officials have said that Umno might suffer disunity if party elections were held earlier than the general election.

  1. Hypocritical question...UMNO is the one that turned ROS into a political tool...
