Anwar admits PKR, Harapan's weakness in penetrating rural Malay areas
PKR president Anwar Ibrahim has admitted his party and Pakatan Harapan's weakness in penetrating rural areas with the coalition's message, particularly in Malay-majority areas.
The opposition leader said the same realisation was felt by top Harapan leaders, including Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke.
"I admit PKR's weakness, and Loke, Mohamad, understands that our weakness as Harapan is also the inability to penetrate into the villages, particularly among Malay-majority areas, to provide explanations to the people.
"I am confident Insya-Allah... we in the first meeting of the new leadership, we will make this a priority, together with Loke, Mohamad and (Upko president Wilfred) Madius (Tangau).
"We will discuss this matter in-depth," Anwar said in his keynote address at the launch of PKR's 16th National Congress in Shah Alam, Selangor today.
Earlier, Anwar, who is the Port Dickson MP, touched on PKR's founding principle to reject injustice and corruption.
He said, however, PKR and Harapan's limited reach in the rural areas made it difficult to deliver their messages on cost of living, housing, education, and wage issues.
"It is because the system is as such... if you watch TV, read in the media, what is taught by our education system, we are not guided to be critical in deciding what is right or wrong, but instead, to just follow instructions.
"That is why when civil servants are appointed, when they sign their appointment letters, it says, 'I'm the one following orders'. There's no need to think, just follow," he added.
