PETALING JAYA: Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan hopes that home minister Hamzah Zainudin would not block changes in Umno’s election rules from being passed by the Registrar of Societies (RoS).
He also questioned the truth of Hamzah’s statement earlier today that the RoS is an independent body making its own decisions, and not controlled by the home ministry.
In a media interview, he questioned the truth of Hamzah’s statement earlier that the registry makes its own decisions independently, and was not controlled by the home ministry.
At another event, Ahmad said Umno would give the registrar two more weeks for a decision on the constitutional amendments.
Umno’s general assembly recently approved the amendments to the party’s constitution allowing party elections to be held after a general election. The amendments must be approved by the registrar.
Ahmad, in an interview with Malaysian Gazette, said the party would be weakened if party elections were to be held before the general election.
“The secretary-general of Bersatu, who takes care of the home ministry, knows this very well,” said Ahmad, indirectly referring to Hamzah. “I hope that there will be no obstacles from him.”
He also hoped the RoS would be able to make its own decision professionally, and said he remained optimistic that the application will be approved, despite his skepticism on the matter.
The RoS had said recently that a decision on the amendments would be made by July 16.
Two more weeks for RoS
Earlier today, Ahmad had said no one should blame the RoS over the delay, or criticise Barisan Nasional (BN) for calling for an answer.
“Don’t point fingers and blame the RoS for not listening to BN or anything like that. We’ll give more time to the RoS, another week or two,” he said in Bangi, Bernama reported.
He said time should be given for the RoS to examine eight additional types of documents requested by the department. “It means additional time is needed for them to provide feedback,” he said.
He denied that the RoS had approved the party’s constitutional amendments, as reported by several media.
