We won’t push for GE15 — yet, says Zahid

Barisan Nasional chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had previously called for an early general election.

JOHOR BAHRU: Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says he will not push for a snap general election — yet.

He told reporters this after a late night press conference following BN’s win in the Johor polls, after being asked if he would push for Parliament to be dissolved.

“No, no, no. We are not going to push for it yet,” he said before being ushered by his bodyguards to his car.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is also an Umno vice-president, did not respond when asked about BN supporters’ calls for him to dissolve Parliament. BN supporters had chanted “Dissolve, dissolve” when Ismail arrived at the BN command centre.

Praise for Bossku’s role in victory

Zahid heaped praise on former prime minister Najib Razak for his role in the coalition’s big win in Johor.

The Umno president said although BN deputy chairman Mohamad Hasan and incumbent menteri besar Hasni Mohamad officially led the charge in Johor, it was Najib who was the “real campaign manager”.

“Although he was attacked non-stop, slandered and mocked, he remained steadfast,” Zahid said to cheers from BN supporters and chants of “hidup Bossku” (“Long live Bossku”), in reference to Najib’s moniker.

Zahid said he dedicated BN’s win in Johor to Najib. He also thanked the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, for consenting to the dissolution of the state assembly which paved the way for fresh elections.

“We promise we will not disappoint His Majesty in governing Johor,” he said.
