It’s nothing personal, says Boo on call for Guan Eng to quit

PETALING JAYA: Former Johor DAP chief Dr Boo Cheng Hau has reiterated his call for Lim Guan Eng to quit as party chairman pending disposal of his corruption cases in court, saying it is nothing personal.
He decried baseless attacks over his call, especially by party leaders, saying some were accusing him of being a sour grape over his loss at the recent party polls.
He said despite losing in the recent party polls, he would stick with DAP, just as he did in 2018 when he fell out of favour with DAP leaders after calling for those who had pending criminal charges not to contest in elections.
“This accusation (of not accepting the loss at the recent party polls) is absolutely absurd and baseless. Its purpose is to confuse the public and party members from the substance of the issues that I raised,” Boo said in a statement today.
He added that he had been an ardent supporter of Lim for decades, and even protested against his imprisonment for speaking up for the victim in a statutory rape case in the 1990s.
“Even though I had just joined DAP then, I stood up for him by organising many events, including ceramahs where police had a strong presence.”
Boo said, however, that the circumstances of the charge against Lim then was different to the graft charges he was facing now.
“As the most prominent leader in DAP, his corruption charges have adversely impacted DAP. That is why we have to face the public with honesty and rationality.
“Hence, I still insist that Lim should resign as chairman and free DAP from any adversity arising from his corruption charges,” he said.
Boo said it was the right thing to do for a leader charged with corruption to relinquish all posts until he cleared his reputation in court.
“This is in line with the party mentor’s (Lim Kit Siang) wish to achieve a world-class democracy,” he said.
Boo then challenged his critics and party leaders Teresa Kok, Lim Lip Eng and Howard Lee to refer him to the disciplinary committee if his statement had affected party interests and principles.
