Guan Eng resign? Wait for court decision, says DAP veep

DAP's position is to wait until the court has delivered a decision before deciding on the fate of DAP chairperson Lim Guan Eng, said Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Chow, who is also a DAP vice-chairperson, said this in response to former Johor DAP chief Boo Cheng Hau asking Lim to step down as the DAP chairperson pending his corruption trial.

"I think until now, the position remains the same... The party will not pursue the matter until the court decision is given on the case," Chow (above) told journalists in Batu Ferringhi, Penang today.

He added that the DAP will consider if there is any change in circumstances.

Lim was elected as the DAP chairperson last Sunday. This was after stepping down as party secretary-general as he had hit his three-term limit after serving for 18 years.

The top executive position was taken over by Anthony Loke.

Boo, a party rebel, stressed that Lim should not hold any position while his case is ongoing.

"Any leader bogged down by corruption charges or scandals should take the initiative to resign from public office to avoid sending a wrong signal on the party’s values to the public and affecting the party’s standing in 15th general election," he had said.

Lim is accused of soliciting bribes to help a contractor secure the planned RM6.3 billion Penang undersea tunnel project when he was the Penang chief minister in 2011.

He was also charged with "wrongfully misappropriating" two plots of state land.
