I don’t have US$681mil in assets to be frozen, says Najib
Former prime minister Najib Razak says 1MDB’s civil suit is aimed at building the perception that he has assets worth US$681 million.
PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Najib Razak has hit out at attempts to portray that he owns assets worth US$681 million (RM2.6 billion in 2013) ahead of the Johor state elections.
“This is false. After years of investigating, the government is clear on the assets I own,” he said in a Facebook post.
Najib was commenting on the injunction obtained by 1MDB and one of its subsidiaries to freeze his assets after they filed a suit to recover US$681 million from him.
Najib pointed out that 1MDB’s civil suit was filed by Messrs Rosli Dahlan Saravana, the firm owned by former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s personal lawyer.
The firm was appointed by 1MDB when Muhyiddin was in power.
“In the 1MDB criminal case, I was charged with nine counts of money laundering because of the RM2.6 billion that was deposited into my account,” he said, alluding to the donation he received from the Saudi royal family.
“I also faced six charges (of money laundering) because the RM2.6 billion was returned to the sender four months after I received it.
“Even though I returned all the funds, 1MDB still wants to sue me.”
Najib said 1MDB’s civil suit was based solely on the affidavit of one of its officers and that this was why it only involved compensation rather than a jail sentence.
“I don’t know why 1MDB thinks I have RM2.6 billion to pay compensation. I do not have assets worth US$681 million.”
He said it was clear that 1MDB’s civil suit was aimed at building the perception that he had assets worth US$681 million that could be frozen.
“What is interesting is that when 1MDB applied for a cap on how much I could withdraw from my account, the company gave an undertaking to the judicial commissioner that it would pay for any compensation should it lose the civil suit.
“This is a form of government guarantee. Has this government guarantee been approved by the Cabinet?”

Najib... has....plenty.... some of the ill-gotten funds may have been passed on to 3rd Parties - that is Najib's problem, not the Court's.
ReplyDelete1MDB's civil suit is intended to recover money that was fraudulently diverted-stolen - with Najib's facilitation.
ReplyDeleteThe civil court hearing the suit has no criminal powers, it cannot order someone jailed, just recover the money.
The tale of the "Saudi Donation" needs to be proven in court, just Najib's talk cock won't work.
