I declined Swiss envoy’s post as I would have to quit as MP, says Nazri

Nazri Aziz says bloggers are ‘stupid’ as ‘they think they know everything when they do not’.

GEORGE TOWN: Nazri Aziz has revealed that he was offered the post of ambassador to Switzerland in 2019 but did not take it up as he would have needed to resign as MP, as per the requirement in Europe.

The former law minister’s comments come after blogger Hussein Hamid claimed that Geneva had refused his appointment, linking him with the Swiss authorities’ probe into 1MDB.

Denying such claims and calling bloggers “stupid”, Nazri said the requirement for MPs to qualify as ambassadors was that they must vacate their seats.

“In Europe, a sitting MP cannot be an ambassador. I don’t want to resign as an MP, my term ends in a year and a half. I will have to wait until I finish my term,” he told FMT.

Nazri, who is the Padang Rengas MP, characterised the remarks made by the blogger against him as “stupid”, but defended his right to say what he wanted.

“I don’t care what people say. The most important people are my voters.

“These bloggers are stupid. They think they know everything when they do not. It is okay if you do not like me and make comments. Better yet, face me in the polls.

“But that being said, I’m not standing (in future elections) again,” he said.

Earlier in his blog, Hussein claimed that Nazri’s appointment was not amenable to Geneva, due to the Swiss authorities’ probe into 1MDB.

“The Swiss government is undertaking a criminal investigation into 1MDB and they feel that Nazri was complicit in the debacle as he was then a senior minister in Najib Razak’s Cabinet,” he said.

He also claimed that Wisma Putra was not in favour of politicians and non-career diplomats being appointed as ambassadors.

  1. Jamaluddin Jarjis was a Member of Parliament for Rompin, Pahang from 1990 until his death on 4 April 2015. He was also appointed as Ambassador of Malaysia to the United States (July 2009 – February 2012)

So Nazri Aziz is talking cork.
