Would Adenan Satem have approved?

MM Online on police arrest of a 17 year old kid for alleged FB defamatory comments on Adenan Satem:

KUCHING, Jan 14 ― A 17-year-old student was arrested today for an alleged defamatory comment she made on Facebook about late Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

Sarawak Criminal Investigation Department chief Datuk Dev Kumar said the girl was arrested at 10.45am today by Mukah CID.

“Her case is being investigated by Bintulu CID under section 500 of the Penal Code and section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act,” he said in a statement here today.

He said as of today, 40 police reports had been lodged in 12 police districts. Investigation is being conducted on seven of the reports.

“So far, five individuals have been arrested by Sarawak police for posting defamatory comments regarding the passing of the Chief Minister”

Many Sarawakians regard the late Adenan Satem as an admirable person, but I wonder whether the late grandfatherly personality would have wanted to see a kid being arrested for alleged defamatory comments again him.

She's just a kid and should be counselled, not arrested.

We tend to be heavy-handed in protecting our leaders which may be too counter-productive in the long run as deep set resentment may build in.

I feel it would be better to inform, educate and counsel rather than threaten, intimidate and arrest.

And I believe too that the late Adenan Satem, being the kind compassionate grandfatherly figure he was, would have wanted it the gentle kindly compassionate way of educating and counselling young kids.
