The Malays and Umno have more reasons to fear Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's reliance on China than the DAP, according to Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The former prime minister said there was a likelihood that Malacca and Kuantan's new port facilities, approved by the Najib administration, would be used by the Chinese military.
"A victory for Najib and Umno (in the next election) would bind Malaysia with China and Malaysia would no longer have a neutral foreign policy like before," he added in a blog post.
Mahathir cited a Chinese writer, whom he did not name, as stating that the two ports would be used by the superpower's naval forces.

As Nazri is known as the PM's man and thus also seen as a Harbinger of the PM's inclination, and Nazri was seen to be chummy with Lim GE, was Dr M alarmed by Nazri's friendliness with Lim as an omen of Najib's wooing of Lim (and the DAP)?
I had then speculated the following:
Possibly Najib wanted to progress Malaysia onward and out of a likely coming slump - obviously he didn't want to be known or seen as the PM of Malaysia who had allowed his country to become a failed state.
Unlike Mahathir and UMNO's hardliners, he had then assessed he needed the nons to support him in his development plans.
The MCA, MIC and Gerakan have been monumental failures in their inability to gather support from the nons, so to Najib they're f**king useless. Sorry for my blunt words but I was then bluntly truthful.

By simple elimination, there remained only the DAP which coincidentally had, still has enormous Chinese and to a lesser extent Indian support. Hence Nazri would be seen as Najib's head-kicking Heretic Harbinger (in his pally-buddy chummy relationship with DAP's Lim GE) because for UMNO to cooperate with the DAP would be considered by its hardliners as an act of political heresy.
But that's precisely why Nazri had that vanguard role, to test the DAP water with his toes and to also take the flak (friendly fire) from the anti-DAP UMNO-ites like Mahathir.

Wikipedia stated that prior to May 13, Mahathir had predicted the outbreak of racial hostility. Then, outside parliament, he openly criticised the government, sending a letter to Abdul Rahman in which the PM then was criticised for failing to uphold Malay interests.

TDM’s remark that “Malays only voted for BN because they feared Anwar would appoint Kit Siang as DPM” is an affront to the intelligence and thinking skills of Malays.
By saying that, TDM is acknowledging his failure to change the mindset and education system of the nation when he was the PM. If TDM believes his policies are gold-plated ones, surely he would concede that Malays in this country have matured in their analytical abilities and moral standing. [...]
With due respect, TDM must see that in this entire planet, he is the one and only political leader who has consistently blasted his successor and his successor’s successor – both of whom he handpicked. No other political leader has sunk to such a low.
Apart from being a naysayer, TDM has also turned soothsayer foretelling the loss of BN in GE14 should Najib still leads BN.
Controversies and the process of election are two different matters. TDM, for all the years of political experience he has amassed, must realize the performance of a political party in any election depends on many factors. His statement is a clear indication that he wants Najib out at all costs and will sing any tune to any band as long as the lyrics of the song wax lyrical about his never-ending refrain of ousting Najib.
