Former religious affairs minister Jamil Khir Baharom has been remanded for five days to assist in an MACC investigation linked to the Tabung Haji royal commission of inquiry, according to his lawyer Hamidi Noh.
Speaking to reporters in Putrajaya after the remand proceedings today, Hamidi said Jamil was being investigated under Section 16A of the MACC Act 2009.
Magistrate Ezrene Zakariah granted a five-day remand from today until Sunday.
Hamidi stressed that Jamil had consistently cooperated with the authorities throughout investigations involving him since 2018.
“He is being detained for five days to assist in the investigation. And he has always cooperated.
“From 2018 until now, Jamil has always cooperated. He has never failed to cooperate,” he said.

Earlier, Jamil reportedly arrived at the court complex at 10.25am wearing the orange MACC lock-up uniform.
Hotel lease in Saudi Arabia
Yesterday, the MACC said it had detained a former minister in connection with investigations arising from the RCI report on Tabung Haji.

The arrest marked the most senior former official detained to date in the widening probe into alleged irregularities involving the pilgrims fund.
According to an MACC social media post, the former minister was detained at about 4.30pm over a case involving the leasing of hotels in Saudi Arabia.
The RCI had scrutinised Tabung Haji’s long-term leasing arrangements for four hotels in Mecca and Medina between 2015 and 2017, involving about 1.43 billion Saudi riyals (RM1.54 billion) in upfront payments.
It highlighted weaknesses in due diligence and risk controls, while rental payments later fell into arrears, prompting Tabung Haji to pursue legal action in Saudi Arabia.
