Ramasamy questions ‘bloated’ Penang Hindu Endowments Board line-up
The Urimai chairman asks why the board needs such a large number when the state executive council itself only has about 11 members

P Ramasamy, who chaired PHEB from 2010 to 2023, said the board typically has 11 commissioners.
PETALING JAYA: Former Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy has questioned the increase in number of commissioners for the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB), saying the move raises concerns over the board’s efficiency.
Ramasamy, who served as PHEB chairman from 2010 to 2023, said the board, which typically has 11 commissioners, had swelled to 19 members with no explanation from the state government.
“If the state executive council itself only has about 11 members, it is puzzling why PHEB needs such a bloated line-up,” he said in a Facebook post.
Ramasamy, the Urimai chairman, also said that the board could function with only the chairman, secretary, and one other commissioner.
In fact, he said meetings could even proceed under the secretary’s leadership if the chairman was absent.
“The previous board was sluggish in assisting Penang’s Hindu community. It is unclear how adding more commissioners will wake the board from its slumber,” he said.
It was reported on Sunday that Jelutong MP RSN Rayer had been appointed as the new PHEB chairman for a year, effective Aug 1.
PHEB also announced that Dr A Lingeshwaran, a senator, would serve as deputy chairman, while state housing and environment committee chairman S Sundarajoo was appointed as the executive council member responsible for coordinating matters with the state government.
On Aug 1, chief minister Chow Kon Yeow announced the appointment of 19 new PHEB commissioners for a one-year term.
Besides Rayer and Lingeshwaran, those appointed included Bagan Dalam assemblyman K Kumaran, Batu Uban assemblyman A Kumaresan, and Penang MIC chairman J Dhinagaran.
