FAM hints at suspension, fine, after futsal coach punched on court

The national football body has requested a full report from match officials and referees before the matter is brought to its disciplinary committee

PETALING JAYA: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) said suspension and fines may be meted out after Sabah futsal head coach Roger Filipe Augusto was punched by one of his own team officials after a futsal match against Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) yesterday.

Its secretary-general Noor Azman Rahman said match officials and referees will have to submit a full report on the incident for the FAM disciplinary committee to evaluate.

“We are reviewing the incident and awaiting reports from match officials and referees. All information will be compiled and submitted to the disciplinary committee for further action.

“If found liable, the coach concerned could face suspension and a fine,” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.

Footage of a scuffle following Sabah’s defeat to JDT in the third-place playoff of the Malaysia Futsal Cup at the N9 Arena in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, went viral yesterday.

Sabah looked on course for victory after taking a 3-1 lead, but JDT staged a dramatic comeback to win 4-3.

Augusto stormed onto the court at the final whistle appearing to confront a match official or opponent. He was then held back by a fellow team official who tried to calm him down.

However, he elbowed that colleague, who then retaliated by punching the Portuguese-born head coach, knocking him flat onto the court.

The match, as well as the incident, was broadcast live on Astro Arena.
