PARLIAMENT | Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal has retracted a remark he made, which was deemed rude, during a debate session in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

The Bersatu leader also issued a public apology for his statement describing the Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club (BNBBC) as “penjilat”.

In the Dewan Rakyat sitting today, he referred to Standing Order 36(4), which prohibits the use of rude, offensive, or sexist language in the House.

“I would like to refer to myself because yesterday I made a statement that I consider unparliamentary, when I said BNBBC were penjilat.

“I would like to retract it. I don’t want it to be recorded in the Hansard. I apologise to BNBBC but I would like to retain the word ‘pengampu’ (sycophant),” he said.

The literal translation for penjilat is licker. However, the word is colloquially used to refer to being a sycophant.

Yesterday, Wan Fayhsal accused BNBBC of being penjilat for defending the government during the debate on the Auditor-General’s Report 2/2025 in the Dewan Rakyat.

“I would like to give a slight rebuke to the BNBBC group in the House. I understand you are defending the government, but it really seems like you are menjilat (bootlicking) or trying to mengampu (toadying).

“When we jilat and mengampu, the truth does not come out. As the English saying goes, ‘keep your friends close, but your enemies closer’.

“Yes, we are rivals, we are adversaries in politics.

“So, when the opposition criticises, we do it in good faith. It is not to destroy, not to lie, not to slander the House,” he said.

‘Congratulations, YB’

Wan Fayhsal’s apology was met with brief congratulations from Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Azalina Othman Said.

“Congratulations, yang berhormat,” she said shortly.

Standing Order 36(4) is an ethical guideline governing the conduct and speech of MPs during debates in the Dewan Rakyat.

Breaching this rule can result in warnings or disciplinary action by the speaker.
