Former BN strategic communications deputy director Eric See-To took a cheeky swipe at Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s “extraordinary tribute” announcement by linking it to a catchphrase famously associated with his jailed predecessor, Najib Abdul Razak.

In a social media post, See-To noted that today also marks Najib’s birthday and remarked that Anwar’s “RM100 cash handout proves what was once ridiculed - that ‘cash is king’”.

He was responding to the prime minister’s announcement this morning that all Malaysians aged 18 and above will receive a one-off RM100 Rahmah Necessities Aid (Sara) that they can use to purchase groceries and household goods.

In the run-up to the 2018 general election, Dr Mahathir Mohamad criticised Najib with the phrase “cash is king”, accusing the incumbent prime minister of using government handouts and financial incentives to buy political loyalty and silence dissent.

The phrase became a symbolic jab by Mahathir and Pakatan Harapan’s broader campaign to discredit Najib amid the 1MDB scandal.

In 2019, Najib confirmed telling Mahathir during a private conversation that “cash is king” during an earlier meeting between the pair.

At the “Hard Truth: Cash is King” forum then, the former premier said Mahathir had misunderstood the phrase.

What “cash is king” really means, according to Najib, is that the people come first.

Earlier today, a post on Najib’s official Facebook page extended birthday wishes to the former premier as he marked his third birthday behind bars.

“Happy birthday wishes to Dato’ Sri Najib Razak. May he continue to be granted strength and good health in facing all trials. Believe this - justice will prevail in its time,” the post read.

Umno and Najib’s supporters believe that the former premier was not accorded a fair hearing under the Mahathir-led Pakatan Harapan government.

The former Pekan MP is also seeking to enforce a royal addendum that would allow him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence, which was reduced from 12 years to six following a royal pardon, under house arrest.
