Rafizi pans PAS’s conditional support of RCI call

The former PKR deputy president accuses the party of riding on the issue

Former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli said even if PAS’s views seem similar to his, it does not mean they stand together politically.

PETALING JAYA: Former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli has criticised PAS for its conditional support of his call for a royal commission of inquiry into judicial appointments.

Rafizi accused the party of attempting to ride on the issue.

“PAS always talks about mature politics. Mature politics means objectively expressing our views on issues of public interest.

“If our views seem similar, it does not mean we stand together on the stage of party politics,” he said in a Facebook post.

Yesterday, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the party would only support Rafizi’s call if he took part in their street protest on July 26.

He said Rafizi’s presence at the rally would send a clear signal that he truly wanted to see the matter investigated independently and transparently.

On Tuesday, Rafizi and eight other PKR MPs called on the government to establish an RCI and parliamentary select committee hearing, following delays in the appointment of top judicial positions, including that of chief justice, which they said amounted to a constitutional crisis.

Their concerns arose ahead of the mandatory retirement of former chief justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and Court of Appeal president Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim.

While it remains unclear who will be appointed to the two top posts, Chief Judge of Malaya Hasnah Hashim is currently serving as acting chief justice, while Federal Court judge Zabariah Yusof has been named acting Court of Appeal president.
