KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is likely to discuss allegations surrounding the purported leak of Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) meeting minutes with Cabinet members next week, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said today.
“Usually the prime minister is very aware of any urgent issues, so there is a likelihood that it will be discussed at the (upcoming) Cabinet meeting,” Fahmi told reporters after launching an AI festival here.
A purported excerpt of the JAC’s meeting minutes from May was said to have been leaked on social media.
The post has since been taken down on Reddit, but snapshots of the post are reportedly circulating on other social media platforms such as Facebook and X.
The purported leak came hot on the heels of allegations that there had been attempts to influence the appointments of new judges, a claim that had prompted nine government backbenchers to call for a Royal Commission of Inquiry.
One of them was former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, who likened the controversy to the judges’ appointment fixing scandal involving a senior lawyer in 2007.
When asked if the leaked excerpt of the JAC meeting minutes was authentic, Fahmi was unsure. But the minister said the document is likely protected by the Official Secrets Act if the document is genuine.
“If the (leaked) document is authentic and classified, then the OSA is applied, so we need to be cautious: first by determining if it is genuine or not. Second, the media particularly needs to be careful about sharing classified documents,” he said.
The government has so far remained tight-lipped about the alleged leak, and the Attorney General’s Chambers insisted earlier this week that the judiciary is not in crisis.
Anwar is set to discuss the matter at a meeting with lawmakers from his Pakatan Harapan coalition tomorrow, a news portal reported.
