KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 — Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today vowed to keep his promise to free his former boss Datuk Seri Najib Razak, saying that there is “another way” to get his predecessor out from prison besides the judicial process.
Speaking to the Friends of Najib Club which is also known as N87, the deputy prime minister however refused to elaborate to the supporters of the disgraced former prime minister — citing the presence of the media at the event.
“This is our struggle, whatever the situation of our figure, and friend we must fight for his fate,” he told the club in its biennial general meeting here.
Zahid also asserted that his commitment to free Najib is unwavering, and will not change anytime soon.
“I know the risk for me. The risk is big but what is the problem with the risk if our friend is still behind bars,” he said.
“I'm very confident that Najib will get a fair defence,” he added.
The Bagan Datuk MP said since the club's inception, Barisan Nasional (BN) has won seven by-elections, with Najib as the main reason for their victories.
“Let's see, the by-election in Melaka, the election results in Melaka we got more than three over four, I know because I'm the Umno president and BN chairman and the factor that won us there was Najib,” he said.
In its meeting today, the club listed five resolutions including pleading for a full pardon for Najib from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim.
The group also pleaded for Najib to carry out his remaining sentence at home.
On February 2, the Pardons Board announced that Najib’s initial 12-year jail term has been halved to six years, which means he can be released earlier on August 23, 2028.
The Pardons Board said it had also decided to reduce his RM210 million fine to RM50 million, and his early release would be contingent on him paying this amount.
If he fails to do so, his early release date will be a year later on August 23, 2029.
The Malaysian Bar has since applied for judicial review of the Federal Territories Pardons Board's decision to reduce Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s sentence from his SRC International conviction, alleging preferential treatment for the ex-prime minister.
