Focus Malaysia:
Comedian Douglas Lim clarifies confusion over “Type C” with hilarious clip
WITH “Type C” trending in Malaysia, it was only natural for well-known home-grown comedian Douglas Lim to wade into the argument.
The innocuous term had come to the forefront of kopitiam discussions after it was used as a racist term to refer to Malaysians of Chinese origin by an admin of the fledgling 100% Bumiputera-owned DarSA Fried Chicken’s website.
Since we're talking about Type C ha ha. Anyway, well done to our Badminton Team. Hope you all get better and better! And sorry for the terrible British accent. #typec
Lim’s video could also be alluding to a recent clip of Malaysian Chinese berating a queue jumper from the ‘Motherland’ to “go back to China”. In his clip, Lim is at pains to explain to an ang moh a.k.a. westerner (also played by Lim) on the nuances of being a Malaysian of Chinese origin.
Using the Thomas Cup as a backdrop, Lim also took a sly dig at the national football team which is loaded with “foreign imports”.
His clip elicited plenty of comments on X (formerly Twitter). Here is a sample of what is being said.
Some shared nostalgic memories of Malaysia’s Thomas Cup triumph on home soil in 1992 when people of all backgrounds came together to will the team to glory.
One netizen observed that more than one Thomas Cup squad featured an overload of “Type Cs”.
One netizen pointed out how different the reaction is from the “Type C” community over DarSa’s faux paus.
Instead of fanning racist sentiments, it is good that Lim tries to diffuse the situation with some light-hearted content.
Take a step back and learn to laugh a ourselves. Otherwise, the bigots would have won. – May 13, 2024
