PAS leader optimistic on reviving Muafakat Nasional pact with UMNO
PAS senior leader Datuk Hashim Jasin expressed confidence in the ongoing informal discussions between PAS and UMNO leaders aimed at revitalising the Muafakat Nasional (MN) pact.
Hashim emphasised the continued belief among many that MN remains viable and worthy of continuation despite challenges.
“Official meetings may not have taken place yet. But, informally, I believe there have been efforts at all leadership levels (to revive MN). They still believe that the door for cooperation has not yet closed.
“As a result of various issues touching on the sensitivities of Malay- Muslims lately, I have seen awareness among UMNO leaders,” Sinar Harian quoted him as saying.

Moreover, Hashim highlighted recent developments that have fuelled discussions including the Federal Court’s decision to invalidate 16 provisions of the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code (I) Enactment 2019 and a proposal by Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming regarding Chinese New Villages in Selangor as potential UNESCO world heritage sites.
The relationship between PAS and UMNO has been strained since PAS joined the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition led by Bersatu, with PAS expressing interest in incorporating UMNO splinter party Bersatu into MN—a move staunchly opposed by UMNO.
Furthermore, Hashim noted the importance of prioritising the unity of the Malay-Muslim community over partisan interests.
He called on UMNO to reconsider its stance on working with Bersatu for the sake of Malay-Muslim unity while asserting PAS’ inability to accept DAP due to perceived differences in agenda.
The relationship between UMNO and DAP was described as challenging, given current issues and divergent objectives.
“UMNO needs to reconsider the issue of Malay-Muslim unity because Bersatu can still set aside their ego and agree to accept UMNO for the sake of ummah unity.
“PAS, on the other hand, cannot accept DAP because we know the party has never endorsed the ummah unity agenda that MN is trying to achieve.” – Feb 14, 2024
