“Why didn’t ‘arrogant’ Muhyiddin resign when PN faced defeat in Melaka, Johor?” Puad asks

UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Mohamad Puad Zarkashi has called Perikatan Nasional chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin “arrogant” for demanding that Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi step down as UMNO president.

This is following the party’s dismal performance in the recent six state polls where the Barisan Nasional (BN) lynchpin had contested 107 seats for the unity coalition but won just 19, a paltry win rate of 17.7%.

Puad pointed out that Muhyiddin himself, too, had not stepped down as coalition chairman following PN’s defeat during the state elections in Melaka and Johor.

“Stop pointing fingers. (The outcome of the polls) is a burden for all of us to bear together. Calling for Zahid’s resignation is not the solution because we are all responsible,” he said in a Facebook post today (Aug 14).

According to Puad, UMNO must win back the support of the Malays, and UMNO’s ministers must also be serious about fighting for the Malay agenda and for the people.

“The power is in their hands,” he stressed.

“This is why UMNO must remain with the unity government. Pakatan Harapan (PH) and BN must strengthen their cooperation. Zahid is the most suitable man for the mission. He doesn’t have to resign so stop over-reacting.”

In addition to Zahid, Muhyiddin had similarly extended his call for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s resignation as well.

Speaking at a press conference following the Aug 12 state elections, Muhyiddin also said PN’s victory in Malay-majority as well as mixed seats in the six state elections is a sign of the people’s rejection of the fragile political alliance and “fake” unity promised by Anwar and Zahid. – Aug 14, 2023
