Ramasamy to quit DAP?

Ramasamy to quit DAP?

The former Perai assemblyman who was dropped as a candidate for the state polls is expected to make an ‘important’ announcement tomorrow.

PETALING JAYA: Penang DAP deputy chairman P Ramasamy is expected to announce his exit from the party tomorrow.

Sources within the party claimed that Ramasamy, who has been with the party for nearly two decades, is quitting as he was unhappy that he was dropped as a candidate in the coming polls.

Earlier today, Ramasamy sent out an invite for a press conference adding that he had an “important” announcement to make.

The press conference would be held at the office of David Marshel, who recently quit DAP and is now standing as an independent candidate in Perai.

“Yes, he will be announcing (his exit from DAP) tomorrow,” a DAP veteran told FMT on condition of anonymity.

Ramasamy was among the seven former assemblymen dropped as a candidate. The three-term Perai assemblyman won the seat in 2008.

Last month, Ramasamy questioned whether DAP was still the same party he joined in 2005, citing a lack of transparency and consistency in the announcement of candidates.

He said a number of incumbents had been dropped on grounds the party wanted to rejuvenate itself but “the fact is many younger candidates were dropped and replaced by much older candidates.”

Marshel had also last month warned that many would quit the party, especially those from the Indian community, following DAP’s treatment of the caretaker deputy chief minister.
