I warned Azmin against Sheraton Move, says Amirudin

The PKR vice-president says he told the party’s former deputy president that the latter risked becoming a ‘scapegoat’ and ‘punching bag’.

The Sheraton Move in 2020 saw Barisan Nasional, Bersatu, PAS, and a faction led by Azmin Ali, the then PKR deputy president, joined forces to topple the PH government.

PETALING JAYA: PKR vice-president Amirudin Shari said he had warned Azmin Ali against going through with the Sheraton Move as the latter would end up being a “scapegoat” and “punching bag”.

The Sheraton Move in 2020 saw Barisan Nasional, Bersatu, PAS and a faction led by Azmin, the then PKR deputy president, joining forces to topple the Pakatan Harapan government.

Amirudin revealed his conversation with Azmin when denying a suggestion that he had not followed the latter because there were insufficient numbers to topple the Selangor administration at the time.

“Two to three weeks before the Sheraton Move, I was having dinner with Azmin and a few friends. He (Azmin) explained the situation to me.

“There was about a 90% certainty that it would take place and that former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad (was not on board),” he said in a podcast episode of Keluar Sekejap, which was hosted by Khairy Jamaluddin.

Amirudin said it was then that he told Azmin that two things would happen if he went through with the Sheraton Move.

“One, he would be made a scapegoat, and two he would end up a punching bag.

“And it has since come true, especially after the 15th general election.”

The caretaker Selangor menteri besar also said it was not a matter of whether the state government could be toppled, adding that it could be done if someone “really wanted to do it”.

He went on to say that the Sheraton Move was “uncalled for”.

  1. There is a continuing suspicion, never properly dispelled, that Amirudin is "Azmin's man", undermining PKR from within.
