DAP's Jagdeep made Penang DCM II, Umno gets one exco post

Jagdeep Singh Deo has been named Penang deputy chief minister II, succeeding three-term representative P Ramasamy, who quit DAP after being left out of the candidates' line-up for the recently-concluded state election.

The Datok Keramat assemblyperson will lead the human capital development, science, and technology portfolio.

BN's Sungai Acheh assemblyperson Rashidi Zinol is the coalition's sole representative in the 11-man executive council line-up, as he heads the trade and entrepreneurial development, and rural development committee.

The deputy chief minister I position will be held by PKR's Batu Maung assemblyperson Mohamad Abdul Hamid. He will be in charge of the Islamic development, education, and national unity portfolio.

The new executive council members were sworn in before Yang di-Pertua Negeri Abdul Fuzi Abdul Razak at Dewan Sri Pinang, in George Town this morning.

BN's Bertam assemblyperson Reezal Merican Naina Merican (Umno), who was rumoured to be made a deputy chief minister, is not listed in the line-up.

Eight out of the 11-man executive council are DAP representatives, while the remaining are two from PKR and one from Umno. Seven of them will serve in the state government for the first time.

The line-up is as follows (listed with their constituencies and their portfolios):

1. Chow Kon Yeow (Padang Kota) - Chief minister, and exco for finance, economy, land, and communication.

2. Mohamad Abdul Hamid (Batu Maung) - Deputy chief minister I, exco for Islamic development, education, and national unity.

3. Jagdeep Singh Deo (Datok Keramat) - Deputy chief minister II, human capital development, science, and technology.

4. Rashidi Zinol (Sungai Acheh) - Trade and entrepreneurial development, and rural development committee.

5. Zairil Khir Johari(Tanjong Bunga) - Infrastructure, transport, and digital development committee.

6. Wong Hon Wai (Paya Terubong) - Tourism and creative economy.

7. Lim Siew Khim (Sungai Pinang) - Social development, welfare, and non-Islamic religious affairs.

8. H’ng Mooi Lye (Jawi) - Local government, and town and country planning.

9. Gooi Zi Sen (Padang Lalang) - Youth, sports, and health.

10. S. Sundarajoo (Perai) - Housing and environment committee.

11. Fahmi Zainol(Pantai Jerejak) - Agrotechnology, food security, and cooperative development portfolio.

'Party man' Reezal keeps chin up after left out of Penang cabinet

Former minister Reezal Merican Naina Merican is keeping it positive after not being picked to represent BN in the Penang state government.

Asked whether he was disappointed, Reezal replied: “No, no.”

“I’ve already been a minister, a deputy minister before.

“When people are given tasks, responsibilities, then as much as you needed people to support you last time, we must also support that person (in return),” he told Malaysiakini.

He added that he was a “party man” and would abide by orders.

Reezal (above) is one of two BN candidates who won seats in Penang during Saturday’s state election.

The other winning candidate, Sungai Acheh assemblyperson Rashidi Zinol, was sworn in as a Penang exco member today, holding the trade and entrepreneurial development, and rural development portfolio.

Ready to assist

Previously, there was speculation that Reezal could be picked as deputy chief minister, but today's oath-taking ceremony put a rest to such rumours.

Asked if the lack of Umno-BN representation in the new state line-up has caused any dissatisfaction among Umno grassroots, or triggered a conflict between BN and DAP in Penang, Reezal said there was no such thing.

  1. The Hindus, who make up the large majority of Indians in Malaysia, may not feel Jagdeep Singh as an adequate replacement for Ramasamy.
Abdul Hamid has high qualifications, a former academic, but inexperienced as a politician.
He has a tough uphill task, Batu Maung has gone from a PH-PKR Safe Seat with a large PH majority to At Risk, due to the Green Wave to PN
