Is IGP Acryl Sani calling it a day four months earlier than his two-year contract?


INSPECTOR-GENERAL of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani is expected to step down about four months before the end of his two-year contract on Oct 3 to make way for a new leadership in the police force this week.


According to The Star, it is uncertain why Acryl Sani, 62, is leaving the force earlier but sources revealed that preparations were underway for the handover-of-duties and “beating-of-retreat” ceremonies which are expected to take place at the Police Training Centre on Jalan Semarak on Friday (June 23).

When contacted yesterday (June 18) to ascertain the truth behind speculations of his early exit from the force, Acryl Sani only said that “there will be an official announcement soon”.


Acryl Sani was appointed 13th IGP replacing Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador with effect from May 4, 2021 (during the administration of eighth prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin). In the same year, he was due for mandatory retirement when he turned 60 but the Home Ministry decided to extend his contract by two years.

Prior to his promotion, he had served as the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) from August 2020.

On June 13, Acryl Sani made headlines when he announced that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will be seeking Interpol’s assistance to find out the full identity and current whereabouts of stand-up comedian Jocelyn Chia who had belittled Malaysians by poking fun at the flight MH370 tragedy.

He said the request would be made the following day so that further investigations could be carried out under Section 504/505(c) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

This has led to former Dewan Negara president Tan Sri Rais Yatim ‘educating’ him that it would be better if the Malaysian police focuses on capturing fugitive financier Low Taek Jho a.k.a. Jho Low who has embezzled billions of ringgit as “the crime of sedition, treachery or criminal defamation is not in the list of Interpol’s jurisdiction list”.



Apart from Rais, Hindu mother M. Indira Gandhi has also urged the Malaysian police to focus on finding her missing daughter instead of seeking Interpol’s help to track down the Singapore-born (but now a US citizen) comedian whose social media followers have mocked the PDRM for giving her a free advertising by getting Interpol to track her down. – June 19, 2023
