HK Star Reminds HK Govt That Michelle Yeoh Is Malaysian Following Her Oscars Win


Hong Kong actor, Chapman To Man Chak better known as 杜汶澤 in Chinese, has taken to social media to remind the Hong Kong government that Oscars award-winning actress Michelle Yeoh is, in fact, Malaysian.

Yeoh made history today by winning the Oscar for Best Actress for her outstanding performance in the film “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once.”

Following her win, 杜汶澤 posted a Facebook status, saying, “Warm reminder to the Hong Kong government: Michelle Yeoh is Malaysian. Don’t just claim her as a Hong Konger.

Previously, the Hong Kong government has claimed Yeoh as Hong Konger after her Golden Globe win for Best Actress in the same film, “Everything Everywhere All At Once”.

Michelle Yeoh, the Malaysian actress who played Evelyn Wang in ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once,’ won Best Lead Actress at the Oscars 2023. She beat out Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas, Andrea Riseborough, and Michelle Williams, making her the first Malaysian and Asian actress to ever win an Oscar.

Michelle Yeoh, whose full name is Yeoh Choo-Kheng, was born on August 6, 1962, in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia. She is of Chinese descent and grew up in a middle-class family. Yeoh began her career as a beauty queen in Malaysia before transitioning to acting.

She made her debut in a Hong Kong action film in 1984 and quickly became a popular leading lady in Hong Kong cinema throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
