Let’s take a ‘back seat’ and unite M’sians, Teng tells DAP

As negotiations continue for a post-election coalition, a DAP veteran has proposed for his own party to take a back seat in any new government, despite emerging with the second-highest number of seats across all parties.

Bandar Baru Klang assemblyperson Teng Chang Kim, who served 26 years as a DAP central executive committee member, said Malaysia is now at a critical juncture with a need to unite all races, following the outcome of the 15th general election that resulted in a hung Parliament.

"We should take the lead to provide a solution if others perceive us as a stumbling block to a strong coalition.

"Let PKR, Amanah, MCA, MIC, GPS and GRS fill up our rightful positions in the government," said Teng (above), hinting at support for Pakatan Harapan to forge an alliance with BN to form a government.

"We take the back seat. Service above self. It will be a great contribution," said the former Selangor state assembly speaker.

Across all major coalitions, PAS emerged as the biggest single winner with 44 seats, followed by DAP with 40 seats.

Harapan, however, forms the largest coalition bloc with 82 seats, while Perikatan Nasional has 73 seats.
