Come clean over alleged PN agreement, PM told
Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim asked if Umno was aware of the agreement that Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob allegedly signed with Perikatan Nasional.
PETALING JAYA: Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has urged Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to clear the air over claims that he signed an agreement with Perikatan Nasional (PN) regarding the allocation of positions, including that of deputy prime minister.
Zaid asked if Umno was aware of the matter, which was only made public last week although Ismail became prime minister last August.
He said Ismail’s credibility was at stake – especially since he is an Umno vice-president.
“Does Umno know about this (agreement)? I want to ask the prime minister whether he, as an Umno leader, brought this (agreement) forward to the Umno Supreme Council to get their approval,” said Zaid in an online talk show.
“Transparency is an important trait for leaders to have. I ask that the prime minister be transparent about whatever agreements he enters into.
“Now (Ismail’s) political secretary is saying there is no agreement. All right. So who is lying? Is Muhyiddin lying, or are you (Ismail) lying?”
PN chairman Muhyiddin Yassin first brought up the alleged agreement last Saturday when the Bersatu president said he met Ismail to discuss Cabinet appointments, including the position of deputy prime minister, as per the agreement.
Bersatu information chief Wan Saiful Wan Jan yesterday defended his party’s demand for the deputy prime minister’s post after claiming that it was part of the agreement for PN to support Ismail as prime minister prior to his appointment last August.
While the current administration does not have a deputy prime minister, the Cabinet has four “senior ministers”.
