PETALING JAYA: Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi has urged the party not to pick anyone who betrayed the party after it lost power in the last general election (GE14) when it comes to choosing candidates for GE15.

The Johor Umno leader was referring to all those who have returned, or could return in the future, after seeing how Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) had bounced back from the crushing defeat in GE14.

He said these members should not be considered at all as they had abandoned the party in its moment of need.

“These are members who do not contribute in any way to strengthening the party.

“Worse, they abandon the party when the going gets tough. But when there is an election, they are suddenly nominated as candidates and receive the ‘golden child’ treatment,” he said in a Facebook post.

Puad, who did not give any names, said these candidates may not be acceptable to the grassroots members who had worked hard to rebuild the party after its poor performance in GE14.

“Umno should stop this practice. It doesn’t matter if they are ministers or millionaires. Such actions do not go down well with the grassroots,” he said.

There has been a lot of speculation on defections back to Umno following the Melaka and Johor elections results, which some analysts said is an indicator of what is going to transpire at GE15.

BN won 21 of the 28 seats in the Melaka polls last November, and obtained another two-thirds majority with 40 seats in the 56-seat state assembly in the Johor elections in March.

At both state elections, BN went solo, without its allies in the federal government, namely Perikatan Nasional (PN), which is led by Bersatu.

One of those who have rejoined Umno is former head of the Pekan Bersatu division Wan Abu Bakar Wan Mohamad.

After leaving Bersatu last August, he praised Umno as the only party capable of fighting for the rights of Malays and Islam in the country. Wan Abu Bakar was the Jerantut MP from 1982 to 1995.

In March, Laili Yusof announced his resignation from Bersatu where he was the Mersing division chief. He accused the Muhyiddin Yassin-led party of having no direction as his reason for returning to Umno.

In May, Sindumin assemblyman and former Warisan information chief Yusof Yacob rejoined Umno in Sabah. The former Sipitang MP, who previously served as the Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker, quit Umno to join Warisan prior to GE14.
