Three days remand for DAP Paloh member under sedition probe

A Paloh DAP division member has been arrested at his home past midnight today for alleged sedition in connection with a Facebook post made some time during the recent Johor election.

Johor DAP vice-chairperson Sheikh Omar Ali said the Johor Bahru Magistrates Court had earlier this morning granted a three-day remand order against 43-year-old S Murugan, one of his campaign workers in Paloh.

"Murugan was picked up by the police from his house in Paloh and taken to Johor Bahru because the police report against him was lodged in Iskandar Puteri.

"The probe under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act was said to be in relation to his Facebook post allegedly encouraging Indians not to vote for MIC.

"Murugan has been a loyal DAP Paloh member working for the party and assisting me since the last 14th general election," the former Paloh assemblyperson who was present in court this morning told Malaysiakini after the remand hearing.

In the last Johor election, Sheikh Omar failed to defend his Paloh seat against BN's Lee Ting Han from MCA.

Other contenders were Perikatan Nasional's V Selvendran and Pejuang’s Aminuddin Johari.
