Stop intimidating Nagaenthran’s mum for suing CJ, lawyer tells S’pore AG

Nagaenthran K Dharmalingam, 34, is scheduled to be hanged tomorrow. His mother, Panchalai Supermaniam, 60, has filed a last-minute suit to halt the execution.

GEORGE TOWN: Singapore’s attempt at “scaring” a mother, who is suing the chief justice, a day before her son is to be hanged for drug trafficking, is unacceptable, lawyer N Surendran said today.

He noted that in an affidavit submitted to the court today, the city-state’s attorney-general (AG) had asked for the names of the persons who had aided Panchalai Supermaniam, 60, in filing the case against the chief justice.

Yesterday, Panchalai filed a case against Singapore’s chief justice, claiming conflict of interest.

The chief justice, who had turned down appeals against her son’s execution, was the AG when he was charged and sentenced for drug trafficking.

Panchalai’s son, Nagaenthran K Dharmalingam, 34, a person certified to be of low IQ, is scheduled to be hanged tomorrow. He was sentenced to death in 2011 when the present chief justice was the AG.

Surendran said the AG’s latest court submission demanding that Panchalai reveal who had aided her in her suit was unacceptable.

“In their submission, the AG’s office is demanding that the court force Panchalai to reveal the names of those persons or lawyers who had helped prepare her application to the court.

“Can a mother not ask for help from kind people to assist her in filing a case in court to save her son from the hangman?

“This is intolerable injustice, cruelty and inhumanity to a suffering mother,” he said when contacted.

Surendran called on the Singapore AG to cease all “attempts to intimidate or threaten” Panchalai and ensure a fair and impartial legal process.
