Zahid: MOU 2.0 fuelled by Harapan's fear of defeat // A. Loke appeals to Ismail Sabri to ignore his UMNO party president

Zahid: MOU 2.0 fuelled by Harapan's fear of defeat

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has dismissed a proposal that Putrajaya strikes another deal with Pakatan Harapan - which would thwart his ambitions of a snap general election.

He said a second memorandum of understanding (MOU) is only meant to give Harapan time to restratagise and avoid defeat if polls are held this year.

"They (Harapan) have internal problems, meaning they are not confident, they feel they will be rejected by the people.

"In my opinion, we should not give them a long opportunity to rectify things, don't give them a chance to arrange their lineup.

"The people's desires have changed, their desire is for BN," Zahid (above) said.

He was speaking at a press conference after visiting the MIC election operations centre in Tampoi, Johor.

Zahid's faction in Umno is using the Johor polls to pressure Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to hold a snap general election if BN can win big in the state.

Yesterday, DAP national organising secretary Anthony Loke extended an olive branch to Ismail Sabri to sign a second MOU with Harapan - if the current one accomplishes important targets such as an anti-party-hopping law.

Loke said with Harapan's support, the prime minister could ignore pressure from Zahid's camp for snap polls and have Parliament serve out its full term until 2023.

Harapan has 90 MPs, enough to keep Ismail Sabri in power if the latter can keep Perikatan Nasional and GPS on his side.
