MoU 2.0 proposal shows PH is jittery, say BN leaders

PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders said the opposition’s call for an extension to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the government shows it realises that the chances of toppling BN are bleak.

In the Dewan Rakyat today, DAP national organising secretary Loke Siew Fook called on Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob not to succumb to pressure from certain Umno members to call an early general election (GE15).

Instead, he suggested a “MoU 2.0” be signed to postpone the elections until after the current parliamentary session ends on Dec 15.

Nur Jazlan Mohamed, the Johor Umno deputy chief, questioned the about-face made by the opposition.

“From the time they lost power in 2020, Pakatan Harapan (PH), and in particular DAP, have been asking for the mandate to be returned to the people,” he told FMT.

“So why is (Loke) taking the opposite view? It must be because he knows that the tide has turned, the people have rejected PH and want BN back.”

He said the recent state elections had been telling, “because the few times the mandate has gone to the people in Melaka and Sarawak, it has been returned to BN. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens now in Johor”.

Selangor BN information chief Isham Jalil agreed, describing the call for an extension of the MoU as a “ploy” to delay a general election.

“It’s a sign that they’re scared to face the rakyat, to go into GE15. They’re not confident about their prospects in Johor, so they’re trying their hand at delaying GE15 as well.

“A general election cannot be delayed any longer because we need a strong and stable government with the mandate of the people to make policies for much-needed economic recovery,” he said.

However, Padang Rengas MP Nazri Aziz agreed with his counterpart across the aisle, who had also cited the ongoing pandemic as a reason to put off a general election.

“What we have to be concerned about now is the rakyat. If we can avoid GE15, we should. Stability for the government can come from the opposition,” said the Umno man.

“As long as we have an MoU, we are stable. We don’t have to worry about anyone threatening to pull out. Loke‘s statement in the Dewan has assured the stability of Ismail’s government.”

PH signed the MoU with Ismail last September to restore political stability following a change of government.

In January, PKR communications chief Fahmi Fadzil said 13 of the 18 items in the MoU had been implemented.
