I’m neither a royalist nor an Umno ‘hardcore’, says Shahrir

Shahrir Samad says he has his own views on the surprise appointment of the Johor menteri besar.

PETALING JAYA: Umno veteran Shahrir Samad has stressed that he has his own views on the issue surrounding the Johor menteri besar’s post, saying that he has his own principles as a democrat.

“When it comes to matters concerning the party (Umno) and the Sultan, I have my own stance. At times I support the party’s decision but in other cases, I support the Sultan,” he said in a Facebook post today.

“I am not a royalist or an Umno hardcore. I have my own principles as a democrat. For me, power must be based on wisdom.”

Yesterday, Shahrir said he was embarrassed that despite a landslide victory in the state elections, Hasni Mohammad was not nominated to a second term as menteri besar, leaving some to question why he appeared to have challenged the Johor Sultan’s authority to decide on a suitable candidate for the post.

He said Hasni’s statement on Monday, in which he called for a young person to lead the state, inferred that another candidate had been named to succeed him.

“I feel ashamed about attending the Umno assembly. The party can obtain the mandate, but cannot name a leader to head the state government,” Shahrir had said.

Onn Hafiz Ghazi, the grandson of former prime minister Hussein Onn, was ultimately sworn in as Johor’s 19th menteri besar yesterday.

The 43-year-old Umno man won the Machap seat with a 6,543 majority in Saturday’s state elections. He served as the executive councillor for youth, sports and tourism in the previous BN-led state government.

Umno-led Barisan Nasional cruised to victory in Saturday’s polls, winning 40 of the 56 seats in the state legislature.
