PKR set to suspend Petaling Jaya MP for 3 years
A source says there is growing unhappiness among the PKR grassroots over Lee Chean Chung’s appearance at Bersama events.
The sources said the decision to suspend Lee instead of sacking him was partly to prevent Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad’s Bersama from automatically gaining an MP in the Dewan Rakyat.
One source said the party was aware of the implications of expelling Lee, particularly following the resignation of former Subang MP Wong Chen and his subsequent move to Bersama.
“If he is sacked, it will effectively hand Bersama an MP,” the source told FMT.
FMT has reached out to PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh for comment but has yet to receive a response.
Another senior PKR leader said Lee was expected to face a three-year suspension. The source said the decision was influenced by growing unhappiness among grassroots members in the Petaling Jaya division.
“A lot of grassroots from his division are unhappy with him and have raised concerns,” the source said.
The source said some members were particularly unhappy about Lee speaking at Bersama events despite still being a PKR member.
Lee has been at odds with the party leadership since the launch of Bersama in May, which the former PKR communications director attended.
He was issued a show-cause letter by PKR’s disciplinary board and later resigned from the party’s central leadership council. He said he would remain a PKR member and continue serving as Petaling Jaya MP until Parliament is dissolved.
The one-term MP also defended his presence at Bersama events, saying he was merely participating in activities held in his constituency.
