KUCHING, June 5 — Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the next state election is around the corner and may be called within the next 100 days.

He therefore called on party members to remain vigilant and not become complacent about past achievements or take victory for granted.

He said they must realise that the forthcoming election is a battle that requires thorough preparation and a full commitment from all members.

“You do realise that we are ‘fighting a war’, right? I think the next state election is no less than 100 days away,” he said during the SUPP 67th anniversary flag-raising ceremony held at the party’s headquarters here on Thursday.

Dr Sim, who is also a deputy premier, cautioned that SUPP could face an uphill battle if its members lacked action and a sense of urgency in their preparations.

According to him, SUPP’s progress and Sarawak’s achievements today are the results of the commitment and hard work of all leaders and members.

Given this, he said they must strive to ensure that they can continue enjoying these fruits.

“We must not be arrogant, overconfident or assume that victory is already ours. As the election gets closer, we must take it more seriously, continue to work hard and work smart.”

In line with this, Dr Sim also called on party members to uphold the fighting spirit of the SUPP founders, actively engage with the local communities, reach out to the people, and promote government policies to win the people’s support.

Stressing that the next state election “is not far off”, he said party members must play their part to speak out and fight for Sarawak.

“Don’t wait for others to do it; start with yourself. As long as we continue to stay united, we will surely achieve our goal of seeing Sarawak shine on the global stage by 2030, that all Sarawakians can be proud of,” he said.

He further pointed out that Sarawak is at a crucial stage of “nation-building” whereby the next state polls will determine whether Sarawak can continue to pursue its agenda such as autonomy in politics, finance, education and healthcare.

Dr Sim noted that Sarawak has achieved remarkable success under the leadership of the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government in recent years, including the establishment of Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) and the Development Bank of Sarawak (DBOS), as well as the implementation of the Sarawak Free Tertiary Education Scheme and other people-friendly policies.

Although conflicts in the Middle East are geographically far from Sarawak, he said international instability ultimately affects global oil prices, transportation costs and the prices of daily necessities, illustrating the importance of peace and stability.

As such, Dr Sim said Sarawakians must never take stability for granted but continue to join hands in preserving it.

“As long as we maintain unity and stability, we can create prosperity. The government will continue to address the people’s needs for education, healthcare and social welfare, but all of this must be built on a foundation of unity and stability,” he added. — The Borneo Post
