Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has insisted that his party has no "direct ties" with DAP, stressing instead that the unity government cooperation was formed between BN and Pakatan Harapan as individual coalitions.

"We (Umno) have never had a direct relationship with DAP.

"Our relationship is between BN and Harapan," he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.

"Since MCA is a component party within BN and DAP is a component party within Harapan, the fundamental basis must be that this cooperation is not party-to-party, but coalition-to-coalition - and this is something that can be managed and on which mutual understanding can be reached," he said.

The BN chairperson said this when asked for comments on MCA president Wee Ka Siong's reported speech from the party's Dec 7 annual general meeting, warning against BN extending its cooperation with Harapan into the next general election.

In his address to party delegates, Wee made a subtle but clear threat that MCA was ready to leave BN should "some allies" wish to continue working with DAP and Harapan.

While he did not name anyone in particular, it was understood that Wee was referring to Umno led by Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister.

Practise ‘political rationality’

Commenting further, Zahid stressed the importance of exercising "political rationality," particularly to face the 16th general election.

"Leave it to the top leadership of both coalitions to handle and overcome the issues at hand," he added.

Wee had targeted DAP and Harapan for alleged "U-turns" on countless issues, which he did not elaborate on.

However, the MCA AGM was held in the wake of the Sabah election, which saw DAP wiped out from the state and PKR remaining as part of the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah-led administration with only one seat, and Umno with six.

Apart from MCA, Zahid also came under attack from MIC Youth after the Umno president accused the BN component of "being drunk on power" over the party's suggestion to similarly leave the coalition.
