Speculation is rife that the Sabah state legislature will be dissolved today to make way for the next state election.
Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor met with Governor Musa Aman for an hour this morning, allegedly to seek consent to dissolve the legislature.
The Sabah state assembly is due to automatically dissolve by Nov 11. Once dissolved, an election must be called within 60 days.
According to a media invitation issued by the Chief Minister’s Department, Hajiji will be meeting government assembly representatives at 2pm today at the Banquet Hall, Level 3, Menara Kinabalu.
Sabah politics is highly volatile and susceptible to change.
The current state government was formed after the 2020 snap state election, and originally consisted of an alliance between Bersatu, BN, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star).
However, after the 2022 state election, Sabah Bersatu defected from headquarters with Hajiji (above, left) leading an exodus to align with the new Pakatan Harapan-led federal government, which also included BN.
Then, in early 2023, Hajiji faced a leadership struggle after a faction within Sabah BN led by Bung Moktar Radin withdrew support for him.

BN’s Bung Moktar Radin
However, Hajiji was able to stay in power thanks to the support of five rogue BN assemblypersons.
Shaky alliances
Alliances going into the election are also muddled. Hajiji’s Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and BN are both partnering with Harapan but not each other.
Expectations are high that BN will clash with GRS in several seats.
Star has also split from GRS over disagreements with the coalition working with Harapan. It's not clear yet whether Star will clash with GRS at the polls.

The election is occurring against a backdrop of a massive corruption scandal implicating the state government and its leaders.
