Amid an investigation into an attack on his son, Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli said it could be linked to his recent meeting with a “group of whistleblowers” with information on a scandal that implicated a “certain individual”.

Rafizi said while he had investigated numerous cases in the past, this was the first time he or his family had been targeted with threats - and in this instance, the threats were aimed at his wife.

“As the media knows, I’ve been quite vocal on certain issues and about certain people in the past month or two. When I start speaking out, whistleblowers will come forward with information.

“Before I met whistleblowers last Wednesday, there was nothing unusual. But after they came to see me, this incident suddenly happened,” said the former minister at a press conference in Parliament today.

Rafizi did not name the implicated individual, but in recent weeks, he had called on the MACC to open an investigation paper against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s former aide, Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak, a rising politician-turned-entrepreneur, whose name was allegedly linked to a coal mining scandal.

He also said he wanted to trace what may have triggered the incident, but would leave it to the police to determine whether there was a direct link.

“In my view, the motive is related to my work. It’s not about anything else. If the message is for me to keep quiet and not touch a certain matter, naturally I would think it’s the same one the whistleblowers raised with me,” he added.

Recounting the timeline, Rafizi said the incident took place around 1.45pm yesterday, followed by the first threatening message to his wife at 1.12am, and a second message at 11.02am today.

He claimed his wife’s movements had been tracked, noting that he had recently moved house and that very few people knew his address.

“For this to happen, it would likely require two to three days of surveillance to know her movements and time it precisely. When I traced it back, even though I thought the threat only came yesterday, the pre-planning must have been done earlier.

“There is CCTV footage, not just witness accounts from my wife, son, and driver, but also from many others who were there, including auxiliary police.

“The suspect was fully covered in black from shoes to visor - you couldn’t see the face at all. It’s like a Korean drama,” he said.
