LETTER | I applaud the Malaysian Bar statement on the recent judicial appointments as it was much-awaited and welcomed.

The statement issued by the president, Ezri Abdul Wahab, expresses the belief that under the new judicial office bearers, the judiciary will continue to uphold the highest standards of independence, integrity and service to the nation, reaching greater heights.

This also negates the earlier speculations of interference in judicial appointments and definitely silences the most vicious attack by others.

Some even falsely claimed it was the biggest scandal in the judiciary.

There must be a dozen speculations relating to the appointments that turned out to be untrue.

I urge the people not to believe in speculations, as it may cause huge damage to the trust in the system.

Such irresponsible behaviour should not have any place in our country.

Indeed, many are still putting out hostile statements related to the issue of the appointment.

Bitter response

I would describe Lawyers for Liberty co-founder Latheefa Koya’s response in Malaysiakini as bitter.

She herself was the MACC commissioner appointed by the then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

She was a solicitor with hardly much experience in MACC cases.

She never uttered a word when Mahathir appointed Richard Malanjum and the then chief justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, when neither names were proposed by the Judicial Appointments Commission.

I believe her current comments are politically motivated; otherwise, she would not have kept silent on those earlier appointments
.
