
'Ustaz vs ustaz' in Ayer Kuning after PN fields Tapah PAS chief

Perikatan Nasional has announced Tapah PAS chief Abdul Muhaimin Malek as the coalition’s candidate in the upcoming Ayer Kuning by-election.
PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man announced Abdul Muhaimin’s (above) name during an event at Dataran Awan, Tapah Road, on Tuesday night, attended by various top Perikatan Nasional leaders and component party members from Perak.
“The candidate that we are announcing tonight has been accepted unanimously. On behalf of PAS, I record our appreciation for all component party leaders.
“PN has agreed to name a candidate who is a local (from Tapah), in this by-election,” said Tuan Ibrahim, who introduced Muhaimin as a youth candidate, and an “ustaz” who graduated from Syria’s Al Fatah Al-Islamy Institute.
Abdul Muhaimin, 43, currently serves as headmaster at the Madrasah Tahfiz Al-Quran Ayer Kuning, as well as serving as a member of Perak Maahad Tahfiz Association.

Abdul Muhaimin in a brief speech after the announcement described his candidacy as a heavy responsibility which he is ready to shoulder with help and cooperation from all supporters.
With Tuan Ibrahim’s announcement tonight, ahead of official nominations, the Ayer Kuning seat is shaping out to be a battle between two “ustaz”, and Parti Sosialis Malaysia’s candidate Bawani KS.

Previously, BN had named Tapah Umno division secretary Yusri Bakir, who is also an ustaz, as the coalition’s candidate.
The by-election was called following the death of incumbent Ishsam Shahruddin, 59, on Feb 22. He was also the Tapah Umno division chief.
In the 15th general election, Ishsam won Ayer Kuning with a majority of 2,213 votes in a five-cornered fight.
The Election Commission has set April 12 as nomination day, while polling will take place on April 26. Early voting is scheduled for April 22.
