Trump's 'explosive' global tariffs take effect - including a 104% rate on China

BBC:

Trump's 'explosive' global tariffs take effect - including a 104% rate on China

    Summary

    • Donald Trump's "explosive" tariffs are now in effect, including 104% on China, the world's biggest exporter

    • Also on the list are 60 of the "worst offending" countries - who will face tariffs ranging from 11% - 50%

    • The additional tariffs on China kicked in after Beijing refused to meet Trump's deadline to withdraw its own retaliatory levies on the US

    • Trump has said that the tariffs are vital for his economic vision, but experts warn a full scale trade war is a possibility

    • US financial markets rallied early on Tuesday but then tumbled once again when the White House confirmed the additional tariffs on China

Most Chinese imports now face a staggering 104% tariff, as the trade war between the world's two biggest economies shows no signs of slowing down.

"We've now reached an impasse that will likely lead to long-term economic pain," Alfredo Montufar-Helu, a senior advisor to the China Center at The Conference Board think tank, told the BBC earlier before the latest tariff took effect.

It's not clear how the US is going to find alternative supply for Chinese goods on such short notice.

"I think the US is overplaying its hand," says Deborah Elms, Head of Trade Policy at the Hinrich Foundation in Singapore.

She is sceptical of Trump's belief that the US market is so lucrative that China, or any country, will eventually bend.

"How will this end? No-one knows," she says. "I'm really concerned about the speed and escalation. The future is much more challenging and the risks are just so high."

The Rest of Asia is rushing to Washington to surrender, humiliated and contrite, offering gifts. 5000yo Bully now stands alone, still want to play poker and up the ante, but one by one, former Asian friends abandon them. They know their future lies in the land of the Brave and Free. Belt and Road will be No More.

  3. Wakakakaka… acting as in Trump's rhetoric of "rushing to US to kiss my arse"!

Yet w/o the tough stand of China, how could the rest of these countries getting a short release of 90 days tariff break from the bullying Yank?

The world is watching & understand that

"their future lies NOT in the land of the Brave and Free. Belt and Road will be No More propagating MORE favourably"

Oooop… don't wakeup, sleep tight with yr American dream!

Every time there's an aviation crash, very important to find out who's on board. The helicopter crash has questions based upon the background of one of the victims. Deadman tell no tales.

Well that’s interesting. No distress call, no bad weather.

Agustín Escobar, Siemens’ tech guru, his name has come up in relation to NATO several times.

Last year comments: We talk about technology with purpose and our goal now is the green transition, in line with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda of the European Union…. we work with a local startup, whose services are offered on our Siemens Accelerator digital platform, which has developed an application aimed at citizen security. It is implemented in 17 cities in the metropolitan area and allows you to have an emergency system on your phone that connects with the police if necessary.

President Trump: Terrible helicopter crash in the Hudson River. Looks like six people, the pilot, two adults, and three children, are no longer with us. The footage of the accident is horrendous. God bless the families and friends of the victims. Secretary of Transportation, Sean Duffy, and his talented staff are on it. Announcements as to exactly what took place, and how, will be made shortly!
