Summary

  • MIC deputy president M Saravanan is confident that Indian voters will cast their ballots for the BN candidate.

  • He says that of the 4,603 Indian voters, 2,600 are considered “loyal”.

AYER KUNING POLLS | MIC deputy president M Saravanan has expressed unwavering confidence in BN’s victory in the Ayer Kuning by-election, citing strong support from the Indian community as a key factor.

The optimism from the Tapah MP comes despite the Malaysian Indian community’s growing dissatisfaction with the Madani government over various issues, with some urging them to send a message to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in tomorrow’s polls.

Saravanan said that with more than 2,600 Indian voters categorised as “white voters” (undi putih), the community’s support for BN remains steadfast ahead of the by-election.

He revealed that MIC is focusing its efforts on consolidating these votes and persuading undecided voters.

Speaking to reporters after meeting the Indian community in Kampung Ayer Kuning yesterday, Saravanan said that 300 voters remained undecided, while another 700 have yet to declare their stance.

There are 4,603 Indian voters in the Ayer Kuning state constituency, which is a Malay-majority seat.

“For now, we consider the 2,600 loyal votes in hand and are working on bringing in outside voters,” he added.

Key election for Saravanan

The Ayer Kuning seat is one of two state constituencies within the larger Tapah parliamentary seat, making it a critical area for the MIC leader.

As Tapah serves as a stronghold for Saravanan, it is essential for him to demonstrate that he still holds the unwavering support of the Indian voters in this constituency.

However, Saravanan has found himself embroiled in an uphill battle over several contentious issues affecting the Indian community. One major point of contention has been the controversial relocation of a 130-year-old Hindu temple in Kuala Lumpur.

Additionally, there has been growing frustration within the community regarding the perceived lack of action against independent preacher Zamri Vinoth, despite hundreds of police reports being lodged against him.

Earlier this week, Saravanan also penned a letter to Anwar urging him to instruct all government departments and agencies to refrain from using the term “kuil haram” (illegal temple), but there has been no response.

The Ayer Kuning by-election was called following the death of the incumbent assemblyperson from BN, Ishsam Shahruddin, on Feb 22.

BN’s Yusri Bakir would be facing Perikatan Nasional’s Abd Muhaimin Malek and PSM’s Bawani KS.
