PKR polls: Winners and losers in Penang, Pahang and KL

The PKR internal polls in Penang, Pahang and Kuala Lumpur have resulted in several big names at the helm of the division level, including women leaders, and also saw known lawmakers losing out.

In Penang, PKR Women chief Fadhlina Sidek succeeded in her contest for the Nibong Tebal division chief post, while the former incumbent Amar Pritpal Abdullah won the deputy post.

Fadhlina, who is also the education minister and the local MP, garnered 677 votes, compared to 335 votes for her rival Muttaqeen Mustafa and 72 votes for Navalan Abdullah.

The PKR divisional polls also reaffirmed Nurul Izzah Anwar’s return unopposed as the Permatang Pauh division chief.

The Penang PKR chief, who is also defending her PKR vice-president post, lost the Permatang Pauh parliament seat to PAS newcomer Fawwaz Mat Jan during the last general election.

Nominations for the PKR division level polls was opened on March 14, and the list of contenders as well as candidates who won unopposed were released prior to the start of campaigning in early April.

Other winners in Penang include Sim Tze Tzin, who won big for the Bayan Baru division chief post with the local MP obtaining 1,032 votes against Cheah Peng Guan, who only received 425 votes; and Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Abdul Hamid who won the Tasek Gelugor division chief’s post.

Losers include PKR central leadership council member Fahmi Zainol and Balik Pulau MP Bakhtiar Wan Chik for their respective contests in Jelutong and Balik Pulau.

In Pahang, one of Anwar's political secretaries, Ahmad Farhan Fauzi, won the Indera Mahkota chief post uncontested.

KL incumbents replaced

Yesterday also saw several party lawmakers defeated in Kuala Lumpur.

Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad lost the Setiawangsa division chief post to celebrity Afdlin Shauki.

In the Bukit Bintang party election, Deputy Unity Minister K Saraswathy lost the division chief position to Anwar Pawan Chik.

In the Batu divisional race, local MP P Prabakaran was bested by lawyer Asheeq Ali Sethi Alivi by a margin of 153 votes.

Wangsa Maju MP Zahir Hassan lost the division chief post there with 495 votes against incumbent Lai Chen Heng’s 587.

This weekend is the second phase of the divisional election involving Terengganu, Kelantan, the Federal Territories, Pahang, Penang, Johor and Sabah.

The first phase last weekend involved Kedah, Perlis, Selangor, Malacca, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Sarawak.
