Summary

  • Jakim is reviewing PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s remarks that voting is more important than the haj.

  • Its director-general warns against making comments on religious matters that can create confusion.

The Islamic Development Department (Jakim) is reviewing Abdul Hadi Awang’s remarks alleging that voting to ensure political victory for Islam is more important than performing haj.

In a statement that did not name Hadi but referenced a news report about the PAS president’s remarks, Jakim director-general Sirajuddin Suhaimee said the review is to ensure that Muslims clearly understand haj and umrah’s place in Islam.

It is also to ensure they appreciate it within Islamic guidelines without misinterpretation.

He said the review will be done with the Federal Territories Mufti Department and other relevant authorities.

Performing haj for those who can afford it financially and physically is one of the five pillars of Islam.

The other four are reciting the syahadah (proclamation of faith), praying five times a day, fasting during Ramadan, and paying zakat (alms).

‘Wrong priorities’

Hadi made the remarks while campaigning in the Ayer Kuning by-election on Saturday.

Citing lessons from the life of Prophet Muhammad, he stressed that the political dominance of Muslims over those from other religions is a matter willed by God.

However, he repeated previous grouses, asserting that Muslims here are more intent on fulfilling their pilgrimages rather than working towards achieving control over the nation.

The haj season this year is set to commence later this month, with the first Tabung Haji flight scheduled for April 29 - three days after voting day for the Ayer Kuning by-election.

Sirajuddin warned that commenting on religious matters should not be done haphazardly.

“Jakim urges all to be careful in making statements on religious matters so that it doesn’t cause confusion among society,” he said.

This is not the first time Hadi has lamented Muslims prioritising going to Mecca over their democratic duties.

Following the 2022 general election, Hadi lamented the alleged poor turnout by Muslim voters and said not voting may be a huge sin.

He also bemoaned how some Muslim voters had “given an excuse” that they were performing the haj or umrah, while also accusing some of waiting for payment to vote.
