DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke has called on party leaders to reflect on the recent election of Donald Trump as US president.

In his speech to Selangor DAP delegates, Loke said there were signs that pointed to the loss of the Democrats and their presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

“Observing global trends, it's clear why the Democratic Party lost. They lost the White House and both houses of Congress, and the American public felt their economic lives had worsened.

“This failure highlights the importance of those in government, regardless of their position, to focus on national development and instil hope for a better future,” he said at the Selangor DAP Convention in Shah Alam today.

Harris, the outgoing US vice-president, was nominated to run against Trump after Democrats’ president Joe Biden pulled out of the race in June.

Among issues that were reportedly attributed to the Democrats’ loss include the Biden administration’s economic policies and support for Israel’s Zionist regime.

Working for the people

Relating the situation to Malaysia, Loke said there are important lessons to be learnt for politicians in government to address basic issues faced by the people or risk being voted out like the Democrats.

He reminded that politicians would not need to worry about election results if people feel that improvements have been made to their lives since the last election.

“Most important in politics, in an election, is to care for the people’s welfare and wellbeing.

“We are not in the government to constantly fight for positions, but to serve the people in our roles as lawmakers, local councillors or even village chiefs,” said the transport minister.
