Barisan Nasional (BN) can win more seats in the next general election if it sidesteps trivial points of contention and focuses on strengthening ties between the component parties, says its chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He called for the BN leadership and machinery to diligently craft election strategies for greater success in the polls.

“If we set aside trivial issues and internal conflicts, then I believe BN can win decisively even in opposition-held states.

We know problems exist in any political party, but what matters is how we address them. Never bring bedroom issues out into our front yard,
he said in his speech at the 71st MCA general assembly.

Zahid also expressed confidence that MCA would once again emerge as a strong party, saying that he would stay by their side, together with MIC and Friends of BN, a group of parties who are not full members of the coalition.

In the 14th general election (GE14) in May 2018, BN secured only 78 out of 222 parliamentary seats, ending its administration in Putrajaya for the first time since the country gained independence.

BN’s performance declined even further in GE15 in November 2022, winning only 30 seats, 26 of which were contributed by Umno.

Meanwhile, Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister, announced that MCA president Wee Ka Siong has been appointed as the investment adviser for the Malaysian Chinese community.

He also assured MCA members that greater efforts will be taken to improve the welfare of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (Utar).

In response, Wee expressed hope that Zahid could help convince Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who also serves as finance minister, to grant Utar and the Utar Education Foundation (Utaref) permanent tax-exempt status.

He said Utar and Utaref have already submitted a request for the exemption under sections 44(6) and 127(3A) of the Income Tax Act 1967.

Wee added that he would meet Anwar to seek a definitive resolution on the matter.

It was previously reported that Anwar had written off RM83 million in tax arrears and penalties for Utar on the grounds that the government does not tax non-profit educational entities.
