PSM deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan has greeted the announcement that former PKR Youth chief and Umno senator Ezam Mohd Noor left Parti Rakyat Malaysia (PRM) to join PAS.
He advised PRM to concentrate on building its own path instead of relying on people like Ezam, who has been known to hop from one party to another.
"This is not surprising. Ezam is being Ezam. When he was PRM, he said PRM was against capitalism and socialism.
"That was shocking because PRM has always been identified as a left-wing party.
"It is time PRM builds its own path rather than hoping some popular outsider will help build the party," Arutchelvan (above) told Malaysiakini.
Yesterday, PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad confirmed that Ezam and former BN candidate for Permatang Pauh Mazlan Ismail had joined the Islamist party.
"PAS only invites people to join the struggle without promising the moon and stars. God willing, they understand the principles and agenda of the party's struggle," he said.
Party hopping
Ezam was an up-and-coming Umno Youth leader in the late 1990s who left the party after his then-mentor Anwar Ibrahim was sacked as deputy prime minister.
He was the founding leader of PKR Youth until his departure from the party in 2007 after an apparent fallout with Anwar.

Ezam Mohd Noor
After spending time abroad, he resurfaced in mid-2008 by rejoining Umno and was appointed a senator in 2010 by the Najib Abdul Razak administration.
After serving two terms, he quit Umno again and joined Bersatu in 2016, only to leave after two months.
He then became leader of the New Gen Party but left in July 2017 after failing to change its name to Parti Bebas Rasuah.
Shortly after joining PRM, he contested in Petaling Jaya in the 2022 general election, losing his deposit as PKR's Lee Chean Chung won by a huge margin.
He was then appointed PRM deputy president in December 2022.
