KPKT to introduce new ‘traffic light’ grading system for local authorities next year

THE Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) has come up with an innovative idea to help improve the services rendered by local authorities.
According to its minister Nga Kor Ming the ministry will implement a ‘Traffic Light’ grading system from next year, with the performance-based system to be implemented in all 156 local authorities.
“The initiative aims to enhance the quality of public services provided by local authorities,” he stated.
“The ministry is committed to ensuring that every expenditure is justified based on Return of Investment and Cost-Benefit Analysis.”
Ng emphasised that all local authorities will have to follow specific standard operating procedures (SOPs) including feasibility studies to prevent inefficient projects and cost-based analyses to optimise expenses.
Under the new system, Green Light will indicate high performance, eligible for additional funding, Yellow Light will mean warning issued, with funding to be reviewed, while Red Light will indicate poor performance leading to rejection of funding applications.
Nga stated the ministry will engage with all relevant authorities to ensure they understand why they failed to meet their Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
The ministry, Nga pointed out, had allocated RM13.2 mil for 31 public infrastructure and socio-economic development projects in Papar and Kimanis in Sabah during the 31st Sentuhan Kasih Programme. – Sept 16, 2024
